Prose is defined as writing that has no metrical or rhythmic structure. Your textbooks, your science reports, your history essays, the Harry Potter books, and your diary are all examples of prose writing. While there are lots of styles of prose writing, the thing they all have in common is that they use grammar rules to make the writing read similarly to spoken language.
Poets use images and feelings--rather than logical arguments--to help convey their meaning. Writing good poetry can be tough, but understanding poetic devices can make the process a lot easier! One of the best ways to get a handle on writing poetry is to understand some of the major devices, or tools, that you can use to put your poem together. While there are literally dozens of poetic devices that poets use to write poetry, here are the three you need to know to get started.
But what is a metaphor, exactly? Metaphors work by helping us create associations between two things in a figurative, or imaginative, way. Does she get mad, but then get over it quickly? A wildfire is a fire that rages out of control, so we can definitely imagine what Linda is like once she gets mad.
Do you have a favorite comedian who just always makes you laugh because she comes up with a surprising way pointing things out? Or do you have a friend who says things in a really unique way that sticks with you? The idea of voice is an important concept in poetry, too. Voice can be described as all the unique word choices and associations that make a piece of writing identifiable as being from a specific author or having a specific perspective.
Poets spend a lot of time creating their voice so that their work stands out from the crowd. They can also use their voice to help shape the topics they write about.
And their poetry is probably going to be pretty substantially different than someone who has a more romantic voice. But even a sarcastic author may want to write a happy poem every once in a while. The form of a poem is essentially how a poem looks on the page. So instead of reading like a paragraph like this one , the poem looks something like this:.
Ultimately, form can involve several things: how many lines per stanza and how many stanzas a poem has, which lines in a poem if any rhyme, whether or not lines are indented from the margin, and whether or not lines repeat. Things like line breaks and stanzas are part of formal poetic structures.
Some poets decide not to use any of these things at all and write in free verse instead. Free verse just means the poem does not follow the rules of any traditional form. The poet is free to invent whatever overall structure she thinks is appropriate for the poem being written. Sometimes these can be individual words on different lines, or poems written in paragraph format.
So how does form affect a poem? I love how you said to cut out anything unnecessary in your poetry. The beauty lies in simplicity and personal artistic impression.
Thank you for the tips for writing a good poem! I agree with all accept, knowing from response. Further into the persons poems, there was hardly any literary devices, even more talking. The poem even got fireworks from the teacher of the group. Yet my poem was actually pretty good with imagery I am very educated in poetry and there was shade thrown, which I believe from some jealousy.
Often people will applaud poems by people they know or that is family, regardless if it is any good. Only way to know is to show your work to a larger audience and not just those who already read your work, or within a click. This happens on all my work. When someone reads at least two pieces of my work, they usually ask where can they buy the book. I keep telling people it is coming out soon. I am actually quite educated in poetry and have been published, and awarded.
I disagree. Something need to be left as they are. I find that is a lazy excuse to avoid seeking education in poetry. I have two favorite reactions that immediately come to mind: I was performing at a high school writing fair, and after my first couple of poems, I noticed about 8 people leaving.
But by the end of my set, the audience was packed. When I spoke to the organizer, she told me the students had been so moved, they went to get bring people to see. The second moment was when I was about to perform an hour set for the poetry class at a senior center.
Before it began, one woman told me she was anticipating a call and might miss my set, so she was considering buying a book of my poetry was any good. I performed one piece for her, which she enjoyed, then spent my entire set with her head down and preoccupied. Turns out, she was writing a poem about how she felt when I recited mine too her earlier. Such cool answers! I wrote a haiku for my friend when he lost his mom. I cried like everyone else was, still oblivious as to why the haiku seemed so familiar.
The biggest compliment was appreciating my own writing, unbiased. Hearing people speak about how beautiful it was without who wrote it made it all the sweeter. I find fulfillment if I make the reader laugh, cry or get pissed off. This lets me know that my work is being seen. I am a poet too. They are there for all to see and read. I can get a good indication from the comments people leave. I wont ever get rich from writing but I get satisfaction from making people smile.
It seems to be working so far. Well, I agree with you that a great poem will demonstrate an excellent command of diction and syntax. Your email address will not be published. Submit Comment. I am looking forward to working with the team on getting my new novel out into the world. Day s.
Hour s. Minute s. Second s. Deadline: Friday, December 31st. Jason Ward on March 5, at am. Cracking voice, big tears, and a hug. I call that a victory.

Read all the poetry: The more poetry you read, the better your own poetry will become. Poets should take in poetry, know the canon, and understand their personal tastes and how to tell a good poem from a great one.
What do you think makes a poem good? Do you focus more on your personal expression or on making poetry that others will appreciate? Share your thoughts about poetry by leaving a comment. One of the things I love about writing is that there are so many ways to do it.
We each get to discover what works best for us. I often follow my vibes or gut feeling, but I also sometimes need to be more strategic. Different methods for different projects! Much can be forgiven if the writing is intended to remain personal. Different considerations apply if intending to read to or be read by an audience. Personally, I feel there is a great imbalance, with much that should be personal being presented to wide audience, without ever being written with them in mind.
Thank you for this article. Word choice resonates the most with me as something that can really elevate a poem. The tongue of the bell does not strike bronze to make its noise, it strikes the void within the form to evoke the sound of emptiness. Yes, every art form is subjective and is going to have its proponents and detractors.
I very been writing poetry since I was But have kept it a secret. While in college my guide dence council who was a bread loaf teacher, challenged me to enter poetry contest. I won some Awards. But that was the only time. Its bit like Whitman.
In any case, I hope you keep writing and that it brings you peace and joy. But yes, the question of how far editing can kill the energy in it is another debate I think….. Enjoyed the article, as it mostly nailed the beast to the wall. Seamus Cooney proceeded to do amateurishly. Beyond that it is up to the reader to like or dislike, but not assign labels.
Without a public body of work, there is zero credentials to back up his opinions. Seamus Cooney proceed to do amateurishly. Rocky — Bad and somewhat borrowed. The Second Coming Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned;……….
Underdeveloped work is like a spine without the skinned wrapping. Very Freudian. I would encourage the author to give a second go around. Stab the best words and lines to act as a template to the piece.
Lost and in love? A good poem usually has a good idea or unique observation at its centre. The form of the poem is not important, but the words are everything and must be vivid and suggestive in the mind.
A bad poem is the opposite. It has a cliched and over-used idea and lacks any insight. The words might try hard to be profound but just come across as being pretentious. For example, Wordsworth, who is rated as one of the great poets, leaves me indifferent. So, what if the poetry is meant to be bad, horrific, grotesque, offensive, etc.??? If the evil or ill-intent shines through, is it still considered bad poetry? Or is that just well-written disgusting poetry?
Perhaps you might not even classify it as poetry, but just childish and demented ramblings. Where are the lines drawn. How will I sleep at night until my works are placed in their appropriate box??? I am hurt. I hurt myself. I make commitments, i dont fulfill. Those are commitments made to me. I need discipline, i need to live in the moment. I get angry, because of me. I often wonder, what is life. I waste a lot of time, wondering. I aim excellence, i aim perfection. I know its a long term process.
I am optimistic. I am energetic, i am lazy. I hate that. I evaluate humans, behaviour, and then judge. I feel, aimless.
