Yep, this story scared me so much when I first heard it. I would continuously sing the song over and over in my head. This is a classic scary story, something stalking the protagonist because he did something wrong. Before I move on, can I just point out how ridiculous this story is? Think about it, He stole from his mum, vandalized a gravesite, disembowelled a corpse, got his mum to unwittingly commit cannibalism and then when corpse came back, he tried to throw his mother under the bus.
My cousins and I were scared of the ghoul when the real evil was little Johnny. Of course, during my research into this story, I found several different versions of this story. I was fortunate enough to find them on a forum. It was a great source of information about the different versions of this tale. Another version had him losing the money on a bet to his classmates. Another version combines the two having him reluctantly joining a marble game and losing only half his money, then coming across a classmate who makes a bet with him, which he loses, for the rest of the money.

History The exact telling of the story alters dramatically depending on era and area, like all urban legends, however, it tends to focus on a boy called Johnny who is given money by his mother to buy liver, yet is a greedy individual and spends the money instead on candy for himself - Johnny then proceeds to steal the liver from a nearby graveyard to trick his mother and despite this obviously being an act of both grave defilement and cannibalism he eats this liver later on, along with his mother.
