At this point, he aimed his wand at the young wizard and tried to cast the Avada Kedavra curse at him. This was an unforgivable curse and would have resulted in Lucius ending up in Azkaban for life. This makes no sense at all.
Lucius lied about being cursed to get out of his Azkaban prison sentence after the first Wizarding War and he abandoned Voldemort during the second war to protect himself. Why would he cast a curse that would result in no chance for freedom before even knowing if Voldemort was actually back?

Lucius Malfoy was one of the Death Eaters who managed to get their crimes reduced or completely got off.
